If you’re having trouble figuring out what to get that special someone in your life, our list of infamous gifts may inspire you or have you shaking your head in disbelief. Ranging from potatoes to wineries to an entire theme park, here are some of the greatest and most hilarious gifts that went viral.
If you ever stopped yourself in the midst of making mashed potatoes and thought, “This would make a great gift,” you might be a little weird, but you’re not alone. Back in 2014, then U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry presented his Russian counterpart, Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, with two Idaho potatoes when the pair met in Paris to discuss the Syria crisis.
Prompting puzzled looks and tweets across the world, Kerry explained that he and Mr. Lavrov had spoken by phone when he was on holiday in Idaho, and the Russian had mentioned the region’s famously large potatoes. Flash forward to a year later and Lavrov returned the favor, gifting Kerry with potatoes and tomatoes. Guess vegetables are the gift that keeps on giving?
A Bottle of Wine With a Hilarious Label
Dubbed by some as the “Best Teacher Gift Ever,” a parent gave their child’s teacher a bottle of wine. But it wasn’t just any bottle old bottle of wine—the label depicted a photo of their child with the words: “Our Child Might Be The Reason You Drink, So Enjoy This Bottle On Us.”
After the gift went viral on Reddit, the parent who created the gift explained, “Now that my son is entering his ‘terrible twos,’ I wanted our gift to be a little more lighthearted. I know all the teachers at his daycare on a very personal level, and knew they would all find our gift to be funny.”
An Entire Winery
One bottle of wine not enough of a gift, you say? That’s what David Beckham thought in 2008. He gifted his wife Victoria with the most posh gift of all—her very own winery in Napa, California. Paying upwards of seven figures, the world-famous soccer star was said to have revealed the surprise by handing Victoria a bottle with her name on the label during a day trip to a winery after the two of them had reportedly become wine buffs while living in Spain.
The winery owners have remained mostly quiet about their holdings, however, with no plans to commercialize their wine. It may be some time before we all learn how to blend it like Beckham.
A Theme Park
If you want to give a gift even more lavish than Beckham’s choice, you might take your cue from Kylie Jenner who created an entire world for her daughter Stormi’s first birthday party. Inspired by Scott’s Astroworld album, Stormi’s World party featured theme park rides, moving cakes, a live performance by Baby Shark, and even Chanel gifts.
Some gifts are fun weird; others are just weird. Taking their cue from Van Gogh, a fan sent actor and musician Jared Leto a severed ear as a gift in 2013. Maybe even stranger than the gift itself was Leto’s reaction. Before punching a hole in the body part and wearing it as a necklace, he told a U.K. radio station, “The fans are an incredibly committed and passionate group of people. Going to a show is kind of like visiting Japan — you expect gifts on your arrival. You get all kinds of wonderful things.” Wonderful. That’s just the word we were thinking, too.
