December is the biggest gift-giving month of the year, with a number of major holidays where gifts are exchanged. December is also chock-full of holidays that aren’t Christmas, Kwanzaa, or Hanukkah. If you’re looking for an excuse to treat yourself—or someone else—check out these offbeat holidays for unusual gifting ideas.
December 1 – Eat a Red Apple Day
Start the month off right: Crunch into a juicy Red Delicious apple, delivered direct to your door from an orchard. Or treat yourself to a red Apple watch band to help keep your health goals on track. Nobody really knows who decided that the first day of December is the right day to eat a red apple, but why not? They’re healthy, they’re delicious, and we all need to eat more fruit during cookies and eggnog season.
December 4 – Wear Brown Shoes Day
You know that adorable pair of brown boots you’ve had your eye on but couldn’t justify buying? Here’s your chance to treat your feet in style. From penny loafers to strappy suede heels, there are brown shoes to suit everyone’s taste. Show your brown shoes some love today.
December 5 – National Bathtub Party Day
The good folks at Wellcat.com have been creating quirky holidays for a while now, and this one may be one of my favorites: National Bathtub Party Day. Whether you party on your own or invite some friends to share in the fun, you definitely should treat yourself to some bath bomb fizzies to soothe your skin and make you feel completely delicious from head to toe.
December 5 – National Repeal Day
While you’re lounging in the tub, drink a toast to another quirky December holiday: National Repeal Day. On this day in 1933, the U.S. Congress passed the 21st Amendment, officially ending Prohibition. Treat yourself to an elegant wine set to help you celebrate the day in style.
December 16 – National Chocolate-Covered Anything Day
You heard that right — there’s a day for chocolate-covered anything, and you should take full advantage of it. It’s not that hard to do, since people have apparently decided that absolutely anything can be covered in chocolate. But you’re not confined to chocolate-covered goodies you can find — treat yourself to a chocolate dipping set, and throw a chocolate-covered party with your friends.
December 21 – Humbug Day
Another gift from Wellcat.com, Humbug Day is for everyone fed up with the constant onslaught of holiday cheer. It’s a day to vent your holiday frustrations, they say, so go for it. Don your Bah Humbug sweater, brew up your favorite beverage, and settle in with a collection of Christmas murder mysteries to cheer you right up.
Everyone should treat themselves to something special once in a while. It’s good for your mental health and your world outlook. If that’s not enough reason to buy yourself a holiday gift, you can find even more excuses to treat yourself at Worldwide Weird Holidays, which includes holidays from all around the world. Be good to yourself. It will make the world a much kinder place.
