Earring styles are so much more than hoops and studs. However, those are classic and oh-so-timeless— never a bad choice. While you’ve probably been shopping for earrings for years, can you name any other types of earrings? Let’s go through seven classic styles, hoods and studs included, and what you might wear with each.
1. Hoop Earrings
This one is straightforward. Hoops start at the front of your earlobes and loop around to the back. Hoops can be simple and classic like these, which pair well with similarly classic outfits and business casual attire, or they can be more modern and make a statement like these subtle hoops with a twist. Your hoops, your choice.
2. Stud Earrings
Another self-explanatory earring style, studs are simple, but you can go in any direction you want with them. Simple silver studs look great with just about any outfit — casual jeans and T-shirt included. Meanwhile, these studs with a geometric pattern would look great with a little black dress. And don’t be afraid to pair a slightly funky stud earring with a classic outfit.
3. Drop Earrings
Drop earrings are the reliable type. They do exactly what the name says they’ll do — drop and dangle (in fact, they’re also called dangle earrings). They do present more options when it comes to shapes and sizes, and designers have more freedom to experiment. These add bohemian flair to a summer dress, while you might wear a more more-formal pair like these to weddings or parties.
4. Climber Earrings
This is where earring styles start to get a little more interesting. Also called crawler earrings, climbers start where a stud is, but then climb up the outer edge of your ear. This cute feather design would look great with a denim jacket outfit for spring and summer. But again, you can opt for a more-formal style, too.
5. Huggie Earrings
Don’t worry—no diapers here. Huggie earrings are similar to hoops, but the hoop is connected with a latch that’s attached to the hoop rather than a separate earring back. It’s less likely to catch on hair and clothes, and there’s no backing to lose. If you move around a lot or are on the go but still want to look put together, this earring style won’t let you down.
6. Chandelier Earrings
The name says it all. Chandelier earrings bring the drama and make a statement. They drape down like a dangle or drop earring, but they have more going on. Rather than a simple drop, they have multiple gemstones. You might opt for a bold but casual style like this beaded pair or a pair that feels formal and vintage.
7. Jacket Earrings
Jacket earrings start with some form of a stud that goes through another, more-dangly piece of jewelry (called a jacket) before it gets sealed with a back. Because the stud is often in the front and the second piece in the back of your earlobe, they have extra dimension and more of a wow factor, like this simple geometric pair. Designers also get creative with all kinds of shapes and colors to help you finish off the perfect party look.
